Kavarattu Sree Mahadeva Temple

Kavarattu Sree Mahadeva Temple, located in Ward 15 of Kumarapuram Grama Panchayat, is an ancient place of worship that stands as a center of faith and devotion for the local community. Lord Mahadeva (Shiva) and Goddess Parvathi are the principal deities of the temple. The subsidiary deities include Lord Sree Krishna, Lord Subrahmanya Swamy, and Lord Ganapathi. A sacred serpent grove (Sarpa Kavu), a distinctive feature of Shiva temples, is also present within the temple premises. Devotees from Kumarapuram and nearby places visit the temple seeking the blessings of Lord Mahadeva, whom they worship as their visible and benevolent deity. Every year, a ten-day annual festival is celebrated during the month of February, creating a spiritually vibrant atmosphere. On the ninth day of the festival, coinciding with Maha Shivaratri, the famous ceremonial procession of the decorated Kettukala, accompanied by traditional temple pageantry, circumambulates Lord Mahadeva as part of a unique ritual. On the tenth and final day, the Arattu (holy ceremonial bath) procession takes the deity through Thanallakkal–Karuvatta to the Sreekolathu Devi Temple before returning to Kavarattu Temple, marking the conclusion of the festival. Blending devotion with rich traditions, this temple continues to be a proud symbol of the cultural heritage of Kumarapuram.
