Citizens and Their Responsibilities

Every individual, as a citizen and a member of society, has certain responsibilities. These responsibilities are both personal and social.

Citizens' participation is essential for the development of the State. Along with enjoying their rights, citizens must also fulfill their responsibilities.

Article 51A of the Constitution of India (1976)

  • Respect the Constitution, the National Flag, and the National Anthem.
  • Uphold and cherish the ideals of the freedom fighters.
  • Protect the unity and integrity of the nation.
  • Defend the country and render national service when called upon.
  • Promote harmony and the spirit of brotherhood.
  • Protect the dignity of women.
  • Preserve the rich cultural heritage of the nation.
  • Protect and improve the environment.
  • Safeguard wildlife.
  • Develop a scientific temper and humanism.
  • Protect public property.
  • Abjure violence.
  • Strive towards excellence in all spheres of individual and collective activity.

Kerala Panchayat Raj Act (1994)

The Kerala Panchayat Raj Act, 1994 strengthens the powers of the Gram Sabha as part of the democratic system of local self-government and ensures people's participation in governance.

  • Participate in Gram Sabha meetings.
  • Respect and follow the decisions of the Gram Sabha.
  • Take part in development activities.
  • Raise public issues and concerns.
  • Participate in social welfare activities.
  • Maintain health and sanitation.
  • Protect public property.
  • Support development projects.
  • Ensure environmental protection.
  • Protect the welfare of women and children.
  • Cooperate with the functioning of the Panchayat.
  • Pay taxes on time.
  • Follow the laws and regulations.
  • Promote social harmony and unity.
